How does that phrase go: in like a lion and out like a lamb? Either way, March is a busy month for events in the Kansas City area.

Sporting events, cultural festivals and fun entertainment are part of KC’s later winter/early spring scene. With interest for all ages, these events distinguish the area and provide great fun as the seasons turn.

Here’s a look at what’s planned for March in Kansas City. Be sure to check each of the sites for all of the relevant details.

Big 12 Tournaments

This year, the best in college basketball is getting together in KC for a great time around the hoop. The Men’s Big 12 Basketball Championships are taking place from March 8-11 at T-Mobile Center, while the Women’s Championships are taking place from March 9-12 at Municipal Auditorium.

Besides the games, plenty of other activities are taking place through those five days. Watch parties, fan fests at the two arenas, an annual charity run and other neighborhood events are a part of what is taking place for that time frame. Be sure also to check out the fun College Basketball Experience, an entertainment facility that lets you shoot your own hoops and learn more about the game so many love.

Snake Saturday Parade and Family Festival

A celebration of all things Irish, the festival takes place on March 11 throughout North Kansas City. Snake Saturday includes a parade featuring great music, dancing and floats.

A charity cook-off also brings local celebrities and chefs together for a fun contest. The Lad and Lassie Contest is a special event for children where they compete for fun prizes by showing their “Irish spirit.” The Family Festival also includes a carnival, petting zoo, race car display and plenty of food and drink for all tastes.

Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Another event takes place on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, from 11 a.m. onward in the Midtown/Westport neighborhoods of Kansas City. This year’s theme for the parade is “Our Irish Ancestry.”

As in past years, it’s a beguiling mix of dancers, floats and musical artists all making the parade route jump and sing with abandon. It’s also a contest, as the parade winners earn prizes and do their best to entertain the thousands of attendees that line these KC streets.

Planet Comicon

This fun event returns to the Kansas City Convention Center this year from March 17 through 19. Fans of sci-fi and comics will find plenty to peruse in the crafter’s alley and the rare finds sections of the convention. During the event, there’s plenty to do and see in the cosplay community.

Often though, the celebrity guests draw the most attention, both on panels and in their own booths where they fans and sign memorabilia.

Three Star Trek actors are slated for the event: William Shatner, Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner. Also on the bill are “E.T.” star Henry Thomas, TV actor William Daniels, wrestling star Kevin Nash and acclaimed “Breaking Band” and “Mandalorian” actor Giancarlo Esposito.
