We talk a lot about Kansas City, Missouri, and all of its attractions, but we don’t talk as much about the Kansas side of the equation. Although it’s smaller in size compared to its neighbor, it also has its own identity and some stellar attractions for the entire family.

From natural beauty to art to several unique businesses, Kansas City, Kansas, has much to recommend it. There’s plenty to do, so here’s a look at just a few of the great sights of this modern yet history-rich Midwestern getaway.

You can find out more about some of the attractions we’ve featured here— and many others — on the official site for Kansas City, Kansas.

Wyandotte County Lake

Located about five minutes from the center of Kansas City, this beautiful natural attraction features a park with more than 1,500 acres of woods with trails. It’s even animal friendly with its own off-leash dog area and a bridle trail.

Then there is the lake itself — 400 acres with its own marina, boat rentals for exploring and a fishing pond just for children.

The Wyandotte Lake area is also known for the Korean/Vietnam War Memorial. The first of its kind in the U.S., this marble memorial features large bronze statues of soldiers and is at the entrance of the park itself.

American Royal

For lovers of the rodeo or any of the other equine arts, American Royal is a must-see attraction. Established in 1899, this non-profit group hosts a wide range of events throughout the year, including several national championship horse shows.

And because this is Kansas City we’re talking about, BBQ is also a huge part of what American Royal brings to the area. In fact, it hosts the World Series of Barbecue that you hear about, taking place at the end of September or the start of October every year. There’s also a BBQ Hall of Fame that the AR Association curates.

Boulevard Drive-In and Swap N’ Shop

So here’s something a bit different: a true combination of entertainment and shopping. It’s a classic drive-in with a distinctive Midwestern feel, including a tree-lined driveway to the main viewing area. Established in 1950, there have been many improvements over the years, including pristine digital sound.

But that’s not all, you can also get some trinkets and items for sale during the drive-in’s swap meet, taking place every Saturday and Sunday. Find out about everything the Boulevard has to offer at its website.

The Charlie Parker Memorial

One of the greats in the world of jazz was the late Charlie Parker. This saxophone giant gave birth to the revolutionary sound of bebop in the clubs of Kansas City.

To pay tribute to this legend, Kansas City, Kansas, had a memorial commissioned to honor the man they called Bird. You can see it on the shores of Big 11 Lake, at 11th and State Avenue.
